The incident resulted in damage to around 1,200 5L containers, leaking an estimated 400 litres of the chemical into the shipping container. Recognising the severity of the situation, Barwon took swift and decisive action to prevent environmental contamination and ensure the safe disposal of the spilled material.

Manual Decanting and Material Consolidation
To address the spill, Barwon’s team manually decanted the damaged boxes and 5L containers. They meticulously consolidated the spilled liquid into Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) to facilitate safe disposal.
Responsible Disposal in Compliance with EPA Guidelines
In line with strict compliance of EPA NSW guidelines, Barwon responsibly disposed of the contaminated material at a licensed facility. Additionally, they followed EPA guidelines by triple rinsing the damaged 5L containers to ensure their safe and environmentally friendly disposal.
Container Rehabilitation and Inspection
The affected 40′ shipping container required a thorough high pressure cleaning and deodorising process before it could be safely de-hired. During this process, Barwon’s team identified a critical concern, the internal integrity of the shipping container had been compromised due to the Class 5.1 chemical spill. As a result, they strongly recommended that a qualified professional assess the container for safety and structural integrity.
Detailed Reporting for Best Practices
Upon successful completion of the hazardous material cleanup, Barwon provided the customer with a comprehensive report. The report affirmed that all procedures had been carried out according to best practices and EPA NSW guidelines, assuring the customer of compliance and environmental responsibility.
